Battleship guns of the period rarely elevated past 30 degrees - Lev casemate guns designed for ground bombardment can depress lower than that. A small advantage, but in this case critical.

Given the way Leviathans appear to be constructed, the Russian airships can't be hovering directly above the Japanese ships, or they wouldn't be able to bring their own guns to bear. And firing off the main and secondary batteries to cover each other is really the only choice the Japanese have at this point. Just because it isn't a practiced strategy doesn't mean it can't be improvised. Commanders who can rapidly adapt are the ones that will cary the day.

What? So you think it would be a good idea to shoot at an armoured airhip hovering over your own ships? If it gets hit it could well drop onto the battleship your trying to save.
Naval battles are conducted in lines, there is no stategy for firing over the bow of your own ships. The procedure for dealing with aircraft was and almost still is using dedicated Anti-Aircraft defences, but the Leviathans are almost immune to anything that could take down an airplane.
Mind you if the Japanese had an aircraft carrier to launch fight bombers and torpedo planes it mighty be a different story, but that was still a few decades away on a different timeline.

Interesting. You'd think the Japanese ships would cover each others blind spots. Maybe the formation's too spread out.
